Lucid Directions

RCVA Student Scholarship Award Exhibition
Organized by Melissa Warner, BFA student in Photography & Intermedia

The Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University is proud to announce the first national juried exhibition of photography.  Lucid Directions an exhibition of works exploring the theme of surrealism as interpreted across the nation by photographers.  Fine art photographer, Alison Carey, will jury the submissions for this exhibition, as well as give a visiting artist lecture on February 23, 2010 at 5:30pm in room 2008 in the Richmond Center for Visual Arts at Western Michigan University.

Alison Carey is a photographer who lives and works in Chicago, IL. Born in Hartford, CT, she received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, a MS in Art from Central Connecticut State University, and an MFA from the University of New Mexico. Carey was a Roswell Artist-in-Residence Fellow during 2005-2006 and a Junior Artist-in-Residence at the Oregon College of Art & Craft, 2007. Carey has exhibited her work throughout the United States; recent solo exhibitions include Michael Mazzeo Gallery in NYC.  She is currently an assistant professor at Columbia College Chicago.

Carey’s work explores Earth’s uncharted territories; she constructs landscapes of the ancient past as well as landscapes that may exist in the possible future. Her current body of work entitled New Kingdoms, depicts a world where engineered “individuals” are transplanted into the Earth’s natural landscapes. In these scenarios, entities of human flesh exist in various grotesque forms that are left to thrive or die as they adapt to Earth’s diverse environments.
